History

image8[1]In 1969 a professor from Washington and Lee University and a group of concerned parents had a vision to provide employment and training for people with severe disabilities in our community.  As a result of their combined efforts Rockbridge Area Occupational Center (RAOC) was created.  RAOC was incorporated in 1986 and was recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c) 3, non-profit organization to serve those with disabilities in Buena Vista, Lexington and the greater Rockbridge County area.  RAOC partners with the Department of Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) to provide vocational rehabilitation, situational assessment, extended and long-term employment training and transportation services for our clients.  RAOC has led the field in serving people with disabilities in Rockbridge County for 45 years by providing person-centered planning to allow each worker to identify his/her skills and abilities; support options and the necessary vocational training to enhance those abilities.  In addition, RAOC provides transportation services, life skills education, and socialization and cultural awareness activities to provide a well-rounded work experience.  RAOC has always matched those skills to customer’s projects to achieve the best commercial outcomes and employee’s satisfaction.
