Making People Able

Getting the business community involved in RAOC’s mission is vitally important for both government and private businesses. One important person in Rockbridge County who embraces that philosophy is Jay Scudder, City Manager of Buena Vista.

“It’s always a part of what we are responsible for,” Scudder states. “To help people who need a leg up or a little extra help. I think that’s a very human function. It’s something we are all responsible for and that extends to the business community as well.”

At both human and business levels, Scudder is quick to underscore the importance of RAOC’s vision of Making People Able In Our Community and highlights RAOC’s presence in our community as a key part of the business sector’s role in ensuring that all individuals in our community are engaged and integrated according to their abilities. “It’s just part of a better community,” Scudder continues. “Everything we can do to get people engaged and out in the community is important.”

When our local businesses go out of their way to find our IDD citizens a place to work in both private business and local government, the returns are evident. These efforts, states Scudder, “are very welcome and very appreciated by employees that work for us. They didn’t have an opportunity before.” I think all businesses should do that…try to provide opportunity for people at different levels.”

Part of the culture in Buena Vista is to provide opportunities for people at different levels. On the other hand, the employees of these businesses also get a benefit from the good work ethic, attitude and friendliness of RAOC’s supported employment clients. “It’s enriching, they’re very well thought of and we appreciate the work that they do,” says Scudder. “It’s just a very healthy support system we have here and we have some great workers.”

Adult Day Services

Scudder emphasizes that RAOC’s entry into Adult Day Services is a major addition in the effort to find jobs for the county’s less advantaged. “I think that the expansion is welcome and certainly something that is needed in the community. Everything we can do to get people engaged and out in the community is important.”
